Under the supervision of the designated Section Manager/Supervisor, performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument calibration and maintenance. The position reports to the appropriate Section Manager/Supervisor. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I also maintains cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel. 

 

SHIFT AND SCHEDULE

Full Time: 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM; Rotating weekends & holidays

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

· Cross-trains in more than one laboratory section: Laboratory sections include; Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank.

· Performs routine and special laboratory tests within the different laboratory departments.

· Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the section manager or pathologist. 

· Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria.

· Releases test reports as designed by our computer system. Prior to releasing results, reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.

· Rotates through Specimen Distribution Center (SDC) as needed

· Participate in proficiency testing.

· Performs quality-control tests within the different laboratory departments. 

· Runs quality-control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording.

· Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the department manager or pathologist. Documents actions taken.

· Holds patient results until out-of control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to department manager, or where appropriate to the pathologist.

· Assists in quality assurance activities.

· Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.

·  Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.

· Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken.

· Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the department manager as required.

· Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the department manager

· Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory section. 

· Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory section.

· Assist in maintaining inventory

· Contributes to the general laboratory functions and Midland Memorial Hospital needs.

· Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.

· Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs.

· Observes laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.

· Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies.

· Maintains equilibrium in stressful situations.

· Assumes the role of Section Manager in the routine daily activities of the section as assigned. 

· Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria.

· Participates in proficiency testing

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· Associates degree or higher

· No experience necessary. 
· Must provide documentation of successful completion of a Medical Technology / Clinical Laboratory Science training program. 

· Must provide documentation of passing a National Certification exam (American Society Clinical Pathology, AMT, etc.) or eligible.

· Must pass National exam within 12 months of employment. 

· Experience in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Blood Bank is preferred.

· Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff.

The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.
