Job Description

Works in conjunction with a licensed Respiratory Therapist (RT) while in an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program. Work responsibilities are commensurate with the learning opportunities occurring in the RT program in which the intern is required to be enrolled as part of employment. However, no invasive procedures will be performed, no new starts of any type, chart oxygen protocols, or any other procedure as deemed by the facility or by law:

 

Sec. 604.003. EFFECT OF CHAPTER. This chapter does not prohibit:

 

(2) the employment by a health care facility of a person to deliver limited respiratory care support services under the supervision of another person who holds a certificate issued under this chapter, if the person delivering the services does not perform an invasive procedure related to critical respiratory care, including a therapeutic, diagnostic, or palliative procedure, as part of the person's employment and if that person:

 

(A) is enrolled for credit in the clinical portion of an approved respiratory care education program; or

 

(B) has completed all of the clinical portion of an approved respiratory care education program within the preceding 12 months and is actively pursuing a course of study leading to graduation from the program;

After graduation, the intern will work in an observation role only until licensure from the Texas Medical Board (TMB) is obtained.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Responsible for quality patient care.
  • Works effectively with Departmental/Hospital computer systems.
  • Conforms to the regulations set by DNV, OSHA, CAP and other regulating bodies.
  • All other responsibilities related to this job function as designated by the Director

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the medical field in general is required.
  • Enrolled in an accredited RT program as designated by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The individual must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.
