Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:
The Phlebotomy Assistant Manager is responsible for the schedule, timekeeping/payroll, new
employee training and quality check ins to ensure effective patient care. The position is also
responsible for student coordination and participating in the hiring process. The Assistant
Manager demonstrates leadership skills and an ability to communicate effectively, orally and in
writing, with other members of the health care team, representatives of external regulatory
agencies and clients. Responsible for overseeing supplies and equipment and promoting
teamwork with staff. Responsible for solving practical problems, dealing with a variety of
issues and interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form. The Assistant
Phlebotomy Manager will report to the Phlebotomy Manager directly.

 

 

Shift & Schedule:

Fulltime, Day Shift, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday 

 

Essential Functions/Performance Expectations 

  • Personnel and Staffing
         1. Oversee shifts including:
              a. Schedule
              b. Payroll
              c. New Employee Training
             d. Employee Continuous Checkups
             e. Student Coordination
             f. New Hire Recommendations
  •  Councils/Committees/Standing Meetings

                 a. Phlebotomy Collaboration Conclave
                 b. Pathology Services – 2nd Wednesday of each month
                 c. Outreach Services

  • Outreach Services
           a. Onboard training
           b. Site maintenance
              1. Supplies
              2. Staffing
              3. Equipment

               c. Troubleshooting

                   1. Order issues
                   2. Phlebotomy personnel issues

  • Supply Management
          a. Proclick/Aperek Ordering
          b. Maintaining adequate supplies including backorder troubleshooting
  •  Interdepartmental Collaboration
    a. Demonstrate mission, vision and values and Culture of Ownership principles
    to collaborate with laboratory and other phlebotomy staff
  •  Projects, including:
        a. Billing backup
        b. Resolving Phlebotomy Section Issues
           1. Halfpenny
           2. ARUP
           3. Cerner
     Technical/Clinical duties: Maintain technical competencies in phlebotomy and SDC
    working shifts and providing staff coverage as needed. Cover gaps in staffing/services,
    e.g., phlebotomist, courier, etc
  •  Ability to identify, assess, and resolve problems (personnel and technical issues)
  • Serves as a member of assigned Committees. Communicate information and direction to
    all team members and specifically to Phlebotomy Shift Lead.
  • Respect patient/clients’ rights and confidential information. Follow all HIPPA
    requirements.
  •  Utilizes problem solving techniques to identify problems. Using effective communication
    skills consistent with culture of ownership principles, follows up with resolutions or
    assists in finding resolutions to problems.
  •  Assumes responsibility for his/her professional development.
  • Adhere to College of American Pathology (CAP), American Association of Blood Banks
    (AABB) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV) regulatory standards.
  • Communicate effectively (hear, listen, speak) with patients, physicians, other health care
    professionals and laboratory staff. Collaboratively works with all organizational leaders.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree preferred or higher.
• Minimum of two years laboratory experience in Specimen Collection and/or
Phlebotomy.
• Certified in Phlebotomy or eligible.
• Valid Driver license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential
responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals
with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The individual must be able to:
 Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for
clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift
device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum
limits.
SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS
 Make effective recommendations in matters of hiring, commendations, promotion, and
transfer working with the Phlebotomy Manager.
 Ensure proper staffing, flexing when appropriate.
 Will step in with Manager Duties when Manager is out or not available.
 Follow and ensure assigned staff is following established safety protocol, dress protocol
and corporate compliance.
