JOB SUMMARY: Performs the essential duties and responsibilities and the primary functions of a Surgical Aide. Tasks will include transporting patients as well as general cleaning functions of the assigned areas. These tasks are performed independently under the supervision of licensed staff. Independent judgment is negligible.

 

SHIFT AND SCHEDULE:

Monday through Friday, and includes being on call one weekend day per month.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Transports patients – always identify patients by checking armband for name and date of birth and compare to transport slip prior to transporting the patient. Demonstrates a willingness to assist other personnel to transport patients and maintain order on the unit. · Assist nurses with transporting patients to critical care areas.
  • Completes routine duties (restocking blanket and fluid warmer, restocking supplies in patient bays and supply room and ordering supplies for kitchen area in PACU and Anesthesia lounge) in a timely, safe manner.
  • Transport specimens to lab when requested.
  • Pick up blood from lab when requested.
  • Supplies in the department must maintain inventory/par levels to compliment patient care.
  • Participate in hospital department inventory yearly.
  • Check oxygen tanks and replace them when they are at half full.
  • Anticipates needs of health care members and actively assists members as needed.
  • Assists nurses with ice packs, SCD’S, pumps or other supplies when needed.
  • Bring warm blankets to patients as needed.
  • Assists with putting BP cuff on, pulse ox, and surgical cap on patient when needed.
  • Assists patients to bathroom and with dressing/ undressing as needed / requested.
  • Always verify with nurse prior to allowing patient out of bed.
  • Promotes hospital efficiency and cleanliness to include keeping work areas, soiled utility room, lounge and bathrooms tidy and clean, stocking, and emptying trash.
  • This does include terminally cleaning isolation rooms and using the UV light.
  • Assist with orientation of new team members
  • Wear name tag above your waist, introduce yourself and explain what you are doing.
  • Radiology badges are not to be worn outside hospital

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School graduate/GED or intellectual equivalent.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The individual must be able to:  Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.
