The Emergency Department (ED) Division Manager, with a focus on interprofessional collaboration, quality and patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules and regulations; and policies, procedures and guidelines of the employing health care institution or practice setting. The ED Division Manager functions under his or her own license and assumes accountability and responsibility for quality of care provided to patients and their families according to the standards of nursing practice. The ED Division Manager demonstrates responsibility for continued competence in nursing practice, evidence-based practice, and develops insight through reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and lifelong learning. The ED Division Manager will provide expert, competent, credible, visible leadership serving to advocate for area of responsibility; support shared decision-making; and allocate resources to
support staff. The ED Division Manager serves as a senior leader and liaison with staff, charge nurses, nurse managers, and other hospital departments; providing nursing leadership and guidance to the employees within the division.

8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Responsible for collaborating with the ED Nurse Manager and Director to support the daily operations of the Division.
  • The primary function of the role focuses on unit schedules with divisional level oversight, including staffing utilization and prioritization, throughput, data collection, and process flow.
  • Assessing and communicating to the Director on divisional level opportunities for optimization and reducing waste.
  • Developing and successfully implementing strategic initiatives to manage patient volumes and financial expenditures/revenue.
  • Responsible for communication and relationship building through shared decision making and stakeholder relationships. Assesses situations; exercises care, discretion, and judgment; assumes responsibility for professional decisions; and acts in the best interest of the patient.
  • Knowledge of healthcare environment demonstrated in practice knowledge, outcome measurement and knowledge of quality improvement metrics.

  • Responsible for initiating and implementing quality improvement initiatives based on outcomes, feedback, and staff needs.
  • Responsible for position control and management of budgeted FTE’s to ensure appropriate staffing ratios based off the needs of the department.
  • Assessing the needs of the department for contract labor, incentives and or internal contracts when necessary and communicating these needs as appropriate to the Director. In coordination with Nurse Manager
  • Responsible for interviewing and hiring new team members.
  • Responsible for payroll and annual reviews of staff.
  • Responsible for updating policies and procedures that guide the division.
  • Responsible for the communication, growth and development, and orientation of all employees.
  • Responsible for quality management audits and related analysis of data.
  • Responsible for ensuring unit-based councils/huddles occur with staff.
  • Responsible for corrective action related to employee performance.
  • Collaborate with educator or other appropriate person, to provide educational activities.
  • Collaborate with Director on department budgets and participate in cost-savings initiatives

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Registered Nurse Supervisor
  • Education and/or experience: Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN). Currently enrolledMSN students can be considered if graduation occurs within 2 years of the assigned position.
  • Licensure: Current State of Texas License as a Registered Nurse
  • 5 years of progressive nursing experience required. 3-5 years of leadership and/or education experience preferred.
  • Course Director for TNCC & ENPC required.
  • Certification in nursing leadership and area of expertise required. Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not already certified.
  • Early Acute Stroke recognition and treatment education required.
  • Must remain current with BLS, ACLS & PALS


SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS

  • Directly Supervises: Staff members of the ED healthcare team, including licensed and unlicensed staff, requiring direction, training and planning in collaboration with the ED
  • Nurse Manager and Director.
  • Indirectly Supervises: Nurse manager in relation to unit level scheduling and optimization and ensuring reporting requirements are done in a timely fashion (ie.
  • Incident reports, annual evaluations).
  • Collaboratively work with all organizational leaders.
  • Reports directly to the Director of Emergency Services and may assume the responsibilities of the Director in his/her absence.

  • Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.
