Job Description

The Mental Health Evaluator, with a focus on patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules and regulations; and policies, procedures and guidelines of the employing health care institution or practice setting. The Mental Health Evaluator is accountable and responsible for identifying, evaluating, and coordinating the care and service of psychiatric patients within the Emergency Department (ED) and the hospital. The Mental Health Evaluator coordinates with physicians, nurses, outside facilities, and other members of the healthcare team to facilitate the plan of care. The Mental Health Evaluator is also responsible for ensuring that the patient is placed in the appropriate level of care, with appropriate monitoring and utilization of healthcare resources, participating in disposition planning to achieve desired clinical, financial, and resources utilization outcomes.

 

SHIFT AND SCHEDULE

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Complete a comprehensive assessment of patients presenting to the ED for psychiatric or mental health issues. This includes the initial and ongoing, extensive data collection, analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Synthesize the data collected during the comprehensive assessment to identify problems, make nursing diagnoses, and to formulate goals, teaching plans, and outcomes.
  • Implement the plan of care. The Mental Health Evaluator may begin, deliver, assign or delegate certain interventions within the plan of care for patients within legal, ethical, and regulatory parameters and in consideration of health restoration, disease prevention, wellness, and promotion of mental health.
  • Evaluate and report patient outcomes and plans any follow-up care and referrals to appropriate resources that may be needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Current State of Texas License as a Registered Nurse preferred.
  • Certification in area of specialty (e.g., CEN, RN-BC) preferred
  • Early Acute Stroke recognition and treatment education yearly.
  • Must meet the minimum standards for Qualified Mental Health Professional-Community Services (QMHP-CS) credentials as outlined by Texas Administrative code which includes

        A. Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum number of hours that is equivalent to a major (as determined by the LMHA or MCO in accordance with §412.316(d) of this title      (relating to Competency and Credentialing) in psychology, social work, medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, counseling, sociology, human growth and development, physician assistant, gerontology,                               special education, educational psychology, early childhood education, or early childhood intervention.
