JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the designated Section Manager performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument calibration and maintenance.

The position reports to the appropriate Section Manager. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I also maintain cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel.

 

SHIFT AND SCHEDULE

Overnight, 11:00pm-7:00am, Weekend/Holidays, On call required 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

- Performs routine and special laboratory tests within the different laboratory departments.

- Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Aids

laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the

section manager or pathologist.

- Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to

established criteria.

- Cross-trained in more than one laboratory section

- Releases test reports as designed by our computer system. Prior to releasing

results, reviews report for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.

- Rotates through Specimen Distribution Center (SDC) as needed

- Participate in proficiency testing

- Performs quality-control tests within the different laboratory departments.

- Runs quality-control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data

recording.

- Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results

are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in

resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the department manager or

pathologist. Documents actions taken.

- Holds patient results until out of control situations are resolved. Reports

unresolved situations to department manager, or where appropriate to the

pathologist.

- Assists in quality assurance activities.

- Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.

- Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.

- Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems,

and corrective actions taken.

- Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical

problems. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in the resolution of

similar problems. Seeks help from the department manager as required.

- Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the department manager.

- Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory section.

a. Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory section.

b. Assist in maintaining inventory

- Contributes to the general laboratory functions and Midland Memorial Hospital needs.

a. Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.

b. Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory

continuing education programs.

c. Observes laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.

d. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.

e. Maintains equilibrium in stressful situations.

f. Assumes the role of Section Manager in the routine daily activities of the section

as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

- Associate, Bachelor’s degree or higher

- No experience to < 1-year.

- Provide documentation of successful completion of a Medical Technology / Clinical Laboratory Science training program or other lab related program.

-  Promotion by authority of the Department Manager based on performance and not experience.

- Provide documentation of passing a National Certification exam (American Society Clinical Pathology, AMT, etc.) or eligible. Must pass National exam within 12 months of employment.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. The individual must be able to: Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.

Bonus -- Up to $45,000

Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years experience.  Bonus is only applicable to new hires. Please inquire for details.
