Under the supervision of the RN, provides direct patient nursing care to adult and pediatric patients. Demonstrates clinical knowledge and judgment. Responsible for promoting positive interactions with staff, physicians, patients, families and other visitors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
• Assesses, projects and plans for patient care needs
• Maintains current knowledge of medications and administers medication in accordance with policy
• Makes appropriate decisions in collaboration with the RN
• Demonstrates positive effective communication, including:
o Communication and reinforcement of instructions with patients and families.
o Communication with physicians and other health care team members’, positive, professional communication techniques.
o Communicates changes in patient status to Clinical Manager or Charge Nurse/Team Leader.
• Demonstrates proficiency in using the electronic medical record providing accurate, timely and complete documentation of patient care
• Respects patient’s rights and confidentiality
• Demonstrates age specific competency in caring for patients
• Provides a safe environment for patients, families and co-workers, including:
o hand washing

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
• Must possess current Texas Licensed Vocational Nursing License
• Must pass hospital medication, IV and blood administration testing, and physical assessment testing
• Must be able to calculate medication dose
• Must complete RN within 1 year of hire to remain in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU). If RN license is not obtained within the required amount of time, employee will have to transfer to another unit with an open LVN position.
• Any staff member who is an LVN in the Progressive Care Unit prior to July 2024 will be grandfathered in and will not be required to obtain an RN license to continue to work in PCU. If the LVN terminates employment and returns to PCU the requirement to obtain an RN license applies.
• Required to complete eight (8) hours of hospital provided continuing education hours upon hire and annually for Total Joint and Spine. Education will focus on management/care of total hip, knee and shoulder replacement as well as elective spine surgery patients.
